About Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a natural therapy that can help ease aches and pains and benefit people with postural problems. Osteopathy aims to identify the root cause of the problem and help to treat the cause, not just the symptoms.
Osteopaths focus on skeletal and joint function and the associated muscles, soft tissues and internal organs to help muscle, ligament and the nervous system function better. The aim is to ease pain, reduce swelling and increase mobility without the use of drugs or surgery – and to give advice on prevention of problems or easing of symptoms in the future.
Our osteopaths are registered and statutorily regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). For more information on Osteopathy visit www.osteopathy.org.uk/information/about-osteopathy.
Who might benefit from Osteopathic Treatment?
Osteopathy is particularly beneficial for those suffering with low back pain but can also help those affected by a wide range of conditions, is suitable for most people, and is beneficial for:
- pregnant women – pregnancy can cause general aches and pains including joint and back pain which osteopathy can help.
- people experiencing age-related pain – e.g arthritis, stiffness
- anyone with lifestyle or work-related issues – help and advice with problems arising from computer use, driving, lifting
- people suffering from conditions such as rheumatism, sciatica, neuralgia, joint pain, digestive problems, cramp and spasms
Do I need to be referred by my GP?
Some patients are referred by their GP, but this is by no means a necessity and osteopaths are fully trained to carry out diagnosis and evaluation themselves.
What does Osteopathy involve, and what can I expect?
Osteopaths use physical touch to diagnose and treat. Treatment may involve stretching, massage and manipulations known as ‘adjustments’. Some of these physical adjustments can result in an audible ‘crack’, this is just the sound of gas bubbles popping in the fluid of the joints and isn’t painful.
The initial consultation involves completing a questionnaire to build up a comprehensive case history that will include all aspects of your health and lifestyle, including any medications you are taking, past surgery etc.
You will then be examined and a postural assessment will be done before treatment can be carried out. Our osteopaths will be able to give advice on prevention, self-help treatments and lifestyle changes. You may be referred for x-rays, blood tests or further examinations.
